R.C. Sproul was a wonderful teacher who loved the Lord. We have been blessed as adults by his teaching and resources. We were thrilled to discover his children’s books so that we could share them with our daughter from a sound teacher.

Pastor Sproul has written several books. We have already reviewed his book The Knight’s Map and are looking forward to sharing reviews of all of the other children’s books he has written.

The Prince’s Poison Cup is an aligorical story to help children understand our need for a savior and God’s plan for salvation. As with the other children’s books by R.c. Sproul, this one is beautifully illustrated.

I will try to do this review without giving too much away about the story. It begins as his other books do, with a child asking their grandpa a question. In The Prince’s Poison Cup, we see a little girl who has to take some medicine to help her feel better. She wants to know why something that is supposed to make her better tastes so bad. This created the perfect opportunity to discuss that some things that seem sweet and good are bad for us and how some things that seem yucky or bad are actually good for us.

The grandfather in the story tells about the King of Life who created a park and people. There was a fountain with pretty sweet looking water that the King told them not to drink from. And they were happy and loved the King, until they finally drank from the fountain. Their hearts hardened and they wanted nothing to do with the King anymore. They left and built their own city.

The King was angry but had known they would do this so he had a plan to save them. He sent His Son with a golden cup to the people’s city to drink from a fountain there that was full of the anger of the King. It was stinky, thick, black, and all around awful. He did as His Father the King had asked Him. He drank the full cup and the Prince died.

Then the King came and brought the Prince back to life! The fountain changed and become sweet and good to drink. The Prince offered it freely to all. And some people came and drank and were made new!

This is a very short summary! There is so much more in The Prince’s Poison Cup! As with Pastor Sproul’s other books, we love the questions and answers at the end that help us see the correlation between what we read and God’s Word.

We HIGHLY recommend The Prince’s Poison Cup. We love to give this book as a gift and our daughter has thoroughly enjoyed it!
