Visiting Reed’s Gold Mine - Site of the 1st Gold Strike in the US
Hey y’all! Welcome to our 1st travel review! We are finally getting back to wandering through God’s world and we’re excited to be bringing you new content and ideas for fun things to do with your family! As always, we try to keep our Lord and Savior at the center of everything we do and we will share tips for some of the ways we do that to help you talk more about the Bible, the Gospel, and Jesus with your little ones in all that you do (Deuteronomy 6:4-7), even visiting places like a gold mine!
Reed’s Gold Mine is a fun, interactive, and educational day trip idea in the Carolinas. It’s the site of the 1st gold strike in the US! We are Carolina natives, so we are always looking for fun day trip things to do. We heard about Reed’s gold mine and loved the fact that a visit there would include a day filled with exploring, history, a bit of science, and outdoor fun all rolled into one place!
We love when we can do things that are educational and hands on. At Reed’s you can visit the museum and exhibits, which from what we saw, surprisingly—and thankfully—didn’t really have any major evolutionary bends! Now that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any, we simply could have missed it. If you come across any, let us know on our social media pages, but take the opportunity to point out the differences in the evolutionary worldview and a biblical worldview. You don’t have to talk about it long, but it makes a difference and it will help teach your kids how to spot things in the world that are counter to their beliefs, even in a place that’s seems as neutral as a museum.
You can also explore the mine, hike trails, have a picnic, and go panning for gold. You can spend as little as a few hours here and really see a lot, or make a day of it and enjoy some great family fun.
And, did you know, spending the day at Reed’s can be totally free! The only activity that costs anything is the gold panning. It’s only a few dollars so not too bad for a day of fun. They also have a small gift shop area. And parking is free and on site, which is always a plus.
There is lots of interesting history about the mine as well as gold in general and a some scientific facts displayed about gold. The most interesting thing I learned was that the mine itself was not very profitable. Most of the gold found there was actually nuggets found in the creek bed or digging around on the property.
Suggestion for discussing Scripture: Read and discuss Solomon’s temple. It was covered in gold! You can make a visual connection to the gold mine to help your little ones grasp just how much gold was used in the temple. This is a great way to open the door to discussing both the line of David, the Gospel, and our salvation through Jesus.
