Do you have a young man in your home or in your life? If you do, please consider giving him Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle. After reading it, we will most certainly be adding it to our go to list for gifts. It is truly a helpful resource for any Christian young man.

It was originally published in 1888 and even though this was written many many years ago, it is still relevant and rings true.

Here’s a little about the author: J.C. Ryle lived from 1816-1900. He held was the Bishop of Liverpool and is known for his expository works as well as his book The Duties of Parents.

Today, we have a culture that isn’t helping boys become men. In fact it almost always encourages boys to continue in a perpetual state of adolescence. About two generations ago, it was common to see 18 year old young men go off to war. Those young men put away their childish things. We don’t encourage that today, and we need to return to that. Men need to be men.

Thoughts for Young Men is a great introduction to these ideas for young men. It would probably be appropriate for ages 12+ but as always use your discretion and discernment as parents and Christians. It is a very short book. The audio version is only a few hours. The edition pictured is great because it also has questions to get you thinking.

With it being a short book, I will try to not give too much away. It covers many things that we see today and young men encounter on a regular basis. It also helps instruct in what choice a young man should make according to Scripture depending on the situation at hand. Many young men are without a male figure in their life, and even fewer with a Christian male mentor. This book doesn’t replace those by any means, but it can be a great help and a great opportunity to share a sound biblical book that points to the Gospel with a young man who may need it, especially if he lacks a Christian male mentor in his life.

Thoughts for Young Men would also be a great study at churches. I would suggest the men’s group putting it on and including young men from ages 12+ as a way of applying the principles found in Titus. Young men need good Christian mentors, but when ages are segregated, if they don’t happen to be blessed with a Christian male mentor, the common set up of many churches and study groups makes it hard for those without to find someone to take them under their wing. And I’m sure older men will get a lot out of this book as well. J.C. Ryle is always worth reading.

We HIGHLY recommend this book. Here is the link to the book. And here is a link to the audiobook in case you would like to listen. The audiobook is very well done! If you would like to give audible a try, here is a link to a free trial of audible plus where you can get up to 2 audiobooks free.
